Excellence in Education


 

The District 8 CEE Committee consists of members of all bargaining units and included in its duties is the co-ordination of the District 8 Excellence in Education Awards Program and Annual Banquet celebrating Excellence in Education.

Awards for Excellence in Education

1.0 Purpose
In order to promote and advance the cause of education in the public secondary school system, the Avon Maitland District School Board and OSSTF District 8 Avon Maitland in partnership institute an Excellence in Education Award and an Awards Banquet to recognize students, teachers, educational support staff, administrators, trustees and community members who have made outstanding contributions to the excellence of the Avon Maitland District School Board school system.

2.0 Eligibility
The following are eligible to be nominated for an Excellence in Education Award:
A) Students of any grade or level in each of the eleven secondary schools in the Avon Maitland District School Board,
B) Teachers or Occasional Teachers in the Avon Maitland District School Board secondary schools,
C) Professional Services and Educational Support staff in the Avon Maitland District School Board,
D) Administrators in the Avon Maitland District School Board,
E) Trustees of the Avon Maitland District School Board, and
F) Community members in the area served by the secondary schools of the Avon Maitland District School Board.

3.0 Award Nomination Criteria

3.1 Student Nominees
Student nominees should be students who have made the most of their opportunities for self-development in their particular school.
They should have contributed towards school program, brought honour to the school, or enriched the life of the school or community in which they live.
They may be students of any grade or level whom the nominator feels are deserving of receiving recognition.

3.2 Teacher, Professional Services and Educational Support Nominees
Teacher, Professional Services and Educational Support nominees should be members of District 8 OSSTF who have encouraged and/or demonstrated excellence through their contribution to the school environment.

3.3 Administrator Nominees
Board nominees would be individuals who are District level employees of the Avon Maitland District School Board and who have made outstanding contributions to the excellence of the Avon Maitland District School Board secondary school system. These nominations are generally submitted jointly by the senior administration and the Trustees.

3.4 Trustee Nominees
Trustee nominees would be individuals who have served in the capacity of Trustee to the Avon Maitland District School Board and who have made outstanding contributions to the excellence of the Avon Maitland District School Board secondary school system. These nominations are generally submitted jointly by the senior administration and the Trustees.

3.5 Community Nominees
Community nominees should be individuals or groups who have been involved with activities related to education and have contributed to the betterment of the school program.

4.0 Nomination and Award Winner Procedures

4.1 Secondary School Awards: Each secondary school is entitled to give a maximum of 4 awards: a minimum of 2 student awards and 2 other awards to students, teachers, support staff or community members.
Nominations for School Awards will be solicited by the CEE school representative. Award winners will be selected from the list of nominees by the OSSTF members of the secondary school in a manner developed by the school.
Non-Secondary School Awards: There shall be a maximum of 5 awards allowed for OSSTF members who are employed outside a secondary school.
Nominations for Non-Secondary School Awards will be solicited from all OSSTF members. Nominations of OCTEA members will be directed to the OCTEA Council which will make the award selection in a manner developed by the OCTEA Council and approved by the District CEE Committee. Award winners of nominees who are not OCTEA members shall be made by the District CEE Committee.
The Senior Administration and the Trustees of the Board shall be allowed a maximum of 5 awards.

4.2 The names of the award winners and the program notes regarding the winner shall be submitted to the Awards Committee along with the completed nomination forms by March 31.

5.0 Awards

5.1 Each winner shall receive an Excellence in Education Certificate or plaque or gift, an Excellence in Education pin and a Board pin and complimentary tickets for themselves and up to two guests to the Awards Banquet.

6.0 Awards Committee

6.1 The Awards Committee shall consist of the OSSTF District 8 Communications/ Excellence in Education Committee and a liaison member of the Board as designated by the Director of Education.

6.2 The Awards Committee shall be responsible for the co-ordination of the Awards Banquet.
